Our media played an enormous role in creating the furore that gripped the country on the public flogging of the 17-year-old girl in Swat. The video footage showing the girl being flogged was aired by channels time and time again. I have a question to ask; when it comes to an incident supposedly carried out by Islamic militants, the media dedicates hours for its coverage. But where was this media when Dr Aafia Siddiqui's plight was exposed to the world? Did they even give adequate airtime for it? Where was this media when thousands of Muslim inmates at Guantanamo Bay were being tortured, sometimes even to the extent of insanity? It seems that the priorities of our media are not to highlight the plight of our suffering brothers but to attract more viewership, be it through the news that is true or false. -A CONCERNED CITIZEN, Karachi, via e-mail, April 7.
