Academic terrorists

A semester system in a university requires that courses should be covered in time and there should be no unscheduled holidays. This is only possible if there is absolute calm at the campus and there is no interruption in teaching. Unfortunately in Pakistani universities, this system has become a joke as there are several interruption within a semester mostly due to incidents of violence. Punjab University campus has for long been afflicted with incidents of violence and lawlessness attributed generally to its students body, an arm of a right-wing political party. The political party is a peaceful political entity itself but its students wing comprises of what could only he described as 'terrorists. The grip of this body has been strengthened due to solid support and patronage it got from the university management during long years of dictatorship in the country. Of late, however, their lawlessness has erupted into unbridled violence and has become something of an open challenge to the university authorities as well as the provincial government. The attack on faculty and violence adnauseum have become a common occurrence, most recent incidents involving the storming of VC office and residence and an attempt on the life of a senior faculty member. This is too much and calls for an urgent surgical action before it is too late. It is high time normalcy is restored in the oldest and most renowned university of Punjab. Politicians, I must say, have destroyed every institution of this country. -ASADULLAH KHAN, Lala-musa, April 17.
