The flow in our rivers is not uniform through the year, more in the summer months and less in the winter months. In fact more than 80 percent of the total flow takes place in the three months of June, July and August and only 20 percent in the remaining nine months. But because of the monsoon rains the demand for canal water is less in the summer and more in the winter. It is 40 percent during the summer months and 60 percent during the winter months. If water is not stored in the wet Kharif period it will not be possible to meet the higher demand for the dry Rabi period. This transfer from wet to dry period can be performed only by dams. Do the opponents of dams have some other method in mind.
