Paying for non-usage

The Controller Public Relations PTV Mr Ali Akbar Abbas says a TV tax of overwhelming amount is being charged in all the 'advanced' countries of the world while PTV lets us off at just Rs. 300. Kind of You The point which the learned PTV man deftly side-steps is that it matters not whether the tax is Rs. 300 or Rs. 30, 000 but that in those countries, the people who pay do actually use the particular TV service they pay for. In Pakistan, though, we do not use the PTV facility at all. We use the cable TV services for which we pay a hefty amount every month. These cable operators include the PTV broadcasts in their package because, presumably, they must be paying for that. PVT tax on public is, thus, simply a 'Jugga tax'. It is really unfortunate that every department in Pakistan has the addendum of a 'public relations wing', simply wasting public funds on the unsavoury business of misinforming the public. DR. ZAHEER ASGHAR KHAN, Lahore, September 12.
