Display of adventurism

Apropos to news about major reshuffle in the bureaucracy along with this contracts of some 100 officials are likely to be canceled. It is a right step in the right direction by the government, but the process must be completed as quickly as possible. The previous government, as well during caretaker government, a large number of people were appointed on contract to facilitate friends and relatives. Although it is not clear who these contract officers are but the government should not forget PIA, cash starved and CAA that is overloaded with senior competent officers, even then people have been offered contract jobs during caretaker government when actually they were not needed. Both organissations have surplus manpower especially in the senior cadre but they preferred to induct people on very hefty salaries and perks by creating superfluous appointments. This tantamount to day light robbery on the exchequer of the country which is filled by cheating the poor who can hardly manage to get two times meal. Apart from lying off the competent authorities must be questioned on such illegal hiring. This step will certainly prove deterrent for future and shall put caution on such adventurism.MUKHTAR AHMED, Karachi, June 19.
