Supreme: court or parliament?

What kind of Chief justice would he be that is called to report on a regular basis to a young, inexperienced MNA in his thirties heading a parliamentary committee? Would Iftikhar Chaudhry like to be restored to become such a 'summon-able' CJ? The PML-N and Ch. Aitzaz would argue that they do not consider the current incumbent to be a lawful CJ and, hence, he can be summoned by a house committee of parliament. But what about the stance of PPP's Speaker, Dr Fehmida Mirza? Clearly all political parties are in full agreement on denigration of the office of the CJ, present or future. This is rather bizarre because before this event, the lawyers' community and the PML-N seemed to stand against desecration of the ermine robes, as they came out to defend the status of a Chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. But now Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan, PML-N and PPP et al are implying in word and effect that Parliament is above all including office of the Chief Justice. -M. SHAIKH, Islamabad, via e-mail, December 18.
