This is with reference to the ongoing debate after annulment of NRO by the full bench of Supreme Court. There is no confusion in any sane Pakistani's mind that military rule is neither an option nor can it offer any solution. The plethora of problems left behind by the military junta of Musharraf and his shameful enforcement of the NRO to prolong his illegitimate rule are proof enough, if any was needed, that military intervention only aggravate the problems further. However, this argument cannot be used to justify the gross miscarriage of injustice, corruption, poor governance and abuse of power that has been let loose by the Zardari government. The PPP needs to redeem its credibility instead of relying on a baseless defense of its unpardonable mistakes and obstinacy in not even trying to curb the open indulgence in financial corruption by its members. The arguments put forth so far by many who have tried to be the devil's advocate, have convinced nobody in Pakistan other than those that are beneficiaries of this loot and plunder of the state assets by the regime. PPP seems to be on the suicidal path of self destruction. The present government is its own worst enemy. Look at the manner in which Pakistan Steel Mill was handed over to the wolves and when all the sheep had been slaughtered, the two wolves involved were removed from the scene. Even if we were to forget about what happened in the past and consider it a past and closed transaction, are we to close our eyes to what is happening now? The royal mess they got themselves into and the scandals that erupted on their handling of sugar, fertilizer, Rental Power Projects, Railways locomotives etc are all the minuses on their balance sheet of the past 16 months. What change is there since on the plus side to make the people ignore these crimes except the lone achievement of an NFC Award. Has the executive delivered and provided good governance- absolutely not. Who selected the corrupt and controversial mediocrity to head Steel Mills, PIA, TCP, National Bank, Railways etc and made thousands of fresh recruitment ignoring merit or transparency. This government must reform itself and be visible doing so by letting go of a few of its most rotten eggs. Credible men like Raza Rabbani, Afzal Sindhu, Aitzaz etc within its fold and technocrats like Tareen or Sardar Aseff might deliver. PPP needs to rely on more of their type instead of the leeches that have contributed to its present dismal performance. -GULL ZAMAN, Paris, December 24.
