Overcrowded jails

It has been observed that the jails in Pakistan have been filled to their capacity and as population increases and also the crime rate; there is an urgent need to construct new ones. The absence of jails in many areas also irks the police, as they have to allocate resources and incur expenses for transportation of prisoners to courts. This also presents itself as a security issue, as dangerous criminals also attempt to escape. The overcrowded jails also present a problem for the authorities, as they are becoming difficult to manage as each day passes. It is most important that these jails should be transformed, from a cesspool of crime into institutions of rehabilitation. YASIR HAMEED, Islamabad, September27.
