As per details, gunmen killed a female worker, Fehmida Yasmeen, by opening indiscriminate fire on her in the jurisdiction of Cantonment Police Station.
Police sources said Fehmida visited her relatives in Sukri Zabta Khan on Monday and as she was on her way back to home, unidentified gunmen attacked and killed her on the spot. She had been a part of anti-polio drive held in last week in Bannu city. Police said the attackers, two in number, were riding on motorcycles, opened fire and fled the scene.
After getting registered an FIR at Cantt Police Station her son Arif Khan, a police constable, said his family did not have any enmity. This is the first incident of attack on polio workers in Bannu. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Anti-polio teams are constantly being attacked in almost every province of the country for the last one year or so. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the government has provided better security facilities to the workers. The World Health Organisation certified 11 Asian countries as polio-free last week, while Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic.
