MIANWALI - About Rs15 million was allegedly embezzled by officers of the Irrigation Department. The funds were allocated by the Punjab government for repair work of flood embankments of Dhingna, tehsil Piplan, The Saprco Construction Company was awarded the contract. The company instead of building embankment, threw the rough stones into the river. The inhabitants of the area told the media that even half of the grant was not spent and the company along with the officers concerned embezzled almost half of the grant. They said that there were no arrangements to check the Indus erosion. They warned that the territory will be eroded by the floodwater, if precautionary measures were not taken. Residents of the area - Malik Nussrat Advocate, Haji Abdul Karim, Malik Bashir Ahmed and former nazim Malik Muhammad Hanif - demanded that the Punjab CM constitute a high level technical team for the site inspection and necessary action against responsible officers.
