People vent anger over loadshedding in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD - The residents of industrial hub has protested against the increase in electricity tariff once again, slamming government of which claims have been exposed in recent NA Standing Committee for Water and Power where the Wapda chairman told the body said that it had been impossible to overcome the shortfall of the electricity in the country till 2018. The chairman also indicated that the situation could take serious turn if the government did not initiate measures for generating more energy in the country. The protesters said the loadshedding was the result of inefficiency and negligence on the part of the government. They lashed out at double standard adopted by the government citing the prime ministers statement where the prime minister admitted that there was capacity to generate 18,000MW, while the generation is around 10,000MW and demand was below 14,000MW but the Wapda chief expressed the bleak picture They said circular debt issue was the creation of corrupt and incapable high-ups and demanded their removal. A source close to Wapda said that the electricity shortfall has jumped up to 6,700MW as the Jamshoro transmission line tripped the other day disrupting supply of power to the consumers. He added that according to Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO), the transmission line tripped due to the excessive moisture and it would be restored soon. Meanwhile, long-hours loadshedding was reported in various parts of the City and city is suffering a power outage of up to 16 hours a day while in the outskirts of the city the power is suspended for 20 hours a day. It was learnt that the power shortfall is increasing despite the fact that water levels at Tarbela and Mangla dams are constantly rising and maximum power is being generated through hydel sources. A Wapda source told that according to details provided by Indus River System Authority (IRSA) the other day, the water level in Tarbela Dam has mounted up 50 feet from the dead level while in Mangla Dam the water level has gone up to 137 feet from the dead level. He maintained that Tarbela Dams current water level is 1428.60 feet; inflow of water is 227,100 cusecs while outflow of water is 190,000 cusecs. He further maintained Mangla Dams water level is 1177 feet; inflow of water is 245,000 cusecs while outflow of water is 215,000 cusecs. He further told that the arrival of water at Kalabagh is 243,161 cusecs while outflow is 235,161cusecs. At Chashma Barrage water inflow is 235,014 cusecs and outflow is 210,201 cusecs while in River Chenab at Marala the inflow of water is 97,192 usecs while outflow is 63,392 cusecs. People of Faisalabad demanded of the government to construct Kalabagh dam on priority and province payments and furnace oil to IPPs on time so that industrial, agriculture and trading crisis can be resolved in entire country and Faisalabad. They also protested against in electricity tariff despite of hours-long loadshedding.
