Malir DSP, two cops shot dead

KARACHI - A day after the press conference by Malir SSP Rao Anwar, DSP Fateh Muhammad Sangi was killed in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Hadeed area along with two other cops during a target killing incident on Friday.
Fateh was reportedly present at the press conference addressed by SSP Rao Anwar during which the SSP had alleged that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) maintains connections with India's spy agency RAW. Rao was later suspended by the inspector general of Sindh police for making such comments.
As per details, the DSP was traveling in his car along with head constable Nazeer and driver constable Farooq when four unidentified gunmen riding on two motorbikes attacked them.
After shooting the police officials dead, the terrorists escaped from the scene with the weapons of the cops they had killed, police said. Bodies of all three martyred police officials were shifted to Jinnah Hospital.
DIG East Munir Sheikh told media that the DSP was killed along a route which was regularly used by him. He added that DSP Fateh was in plain clothes when he was targeted.
IGP Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali speaking to reporters said the attack on the DSP was target killing. The IGP also praised suspended SSP Malir Rao Anwar saying he played an active role in eliminating terrorism.
The post-mortem report has revealed the DSP was shot nine times while police constable Farooq and Nazir were shot eight times each. According to the report the policemen were targeted from four sides and 9mm pistols were used in the attack.
Meanwhile, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed the responsibility for the attack. It said TTP’s sharp shooters successfully carried out the operation. Muhammad Khurasani, spokesman for the TTP, said that the DSP was on number 38 on the list of TTP.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has asked the inspector general of police to submit a report in this regard. Condemning the incident, CM Qaim said such cowardly acts would not demoralise the government.
Karachi is not alien to police target killings as last month, SHO Ejaz Khawaja was shot dead in Clifton. As the government continues to be on the offensive against terrorists and armed miscreants of the city, incidents of firing and cracker attacks have also taken place against police officials. During the last six months of 2014, at least 80 policemen were killed in different incidents of target killing and violence across the city.
The chief minister said that sacrifices of law enforcement personnel would not go waste and such cowardly attacks could not shake their resolve. Culprits would be brought to justice at any cost, he added.
