Pak envoy briefs US lawmakers on Afghan peace efforts

DETRIOT - Pakistan's Ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani conferred with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers as well as members of the Pakistani community during a day-long visit to Detriot in the US State of Michighan.

The ambassador met Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow, a member of Senate's Agriculture, Finance, Energy and Budget Committee and briefed her about Pakistan's potential in agriculture, energy, mining, gems, infrastructure, IT and telecom sectors as the geo-economic hub of Asia, stating that the under-tapped Pakistani market should be explored, according to a Press release.

Jilani also underscored the role of the Pakistani-American community in the development of Michigan.

He extended invitation to Senator Stabwnow for visit to Pakistan, which she accepted.

The Pakistan envoy also met Republican Congressman Dave Trott, a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Judiciary, in particular the Sub-Committee on the Middle East and North Africa.

The ambassador held that Michigan has always been an area of special importance for him due to its high concentration of Pakistani community.

While appreciating Congressman Trott's efforts in creating job opportunities for the residents of Michigan, he suggested appropriate representation of the Pakistani-Americans in State offices.

Jilani briefed the Congressman about sacrifices made by Pakistan in the global war against terrorism, highlighting the recent successes in the crackdown on terrorists.

Jilani also briefed the Congressman Trott about the measures to combat extremism in the country.

He spoke in particular about the cooperation between Pakistan and US in countering extremism in the region through regular interaction and exchange of intelligence.

Jilani also briefed him on Pakistan's role in ensuring peace and security in Afghanistan.

Congressman Trott appreciated the role of the govt and people of Pakistan in creating the better future for the coming generation.  He thankfully accepted Ambassador Jilani's invitation for visit to Pakistan.

Jilani also underscored the need for more academic connections between the two sides as Congressman Trott sits on the Board of University of Michigan Ann Arbor.

During his interactions with political leaders of Michigan, Jilani urged them to motivate local businesses for participation in the 'Pak-US Business opportunities Conference' being organised in New York by Embassy of Pakistan in collaboration with US Department of State.

The politicians from Michigan appreciated Pakistan's role in fight against terrorism, the Press release said.

They also acknowledged the role of the Pakistani-American community in developing ties between the two countries as well as in economic development of US.

During a meeting with members of the Pakistani community in Michigan, Jilani assured them that Pakistani Missions in US are striving their best to help Pakistanis living in US.

While he was in Detroit, he said that a team from the Pakistan Consulate in Chicago was extending Consular services to the community at their door step.

He also announced that the Consulate in Chicago would conduct three Consular camps to Michigan every year.

Jilani urged the Pakistani community to actively participate in the local politics of the country of adoption.

He was also the chief guest at the International Women Day event, which was organised by the Pakistan Women Association of Michigan.

While appreciating role of women in social development of any nation, he said that Pakistani women were blessed with enormous capabilities and great potential and they are playing significant roles in all walks of life, shoulder-to-shoulder with men.

He also appreciated the role of the Pakistan Women Association, Michigan, in projecting persona of the Pakistani women.
