Peshawar - The National Institute of Health Saturday confirmed another two polio cases from KP.The new cases took the nationwide polio count to 104. Pakistan has recorded highest number of polio cases among the three endemic countries. One newly-infected child is the resident of the violence-wracked Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency, Hafsa. One year old Salma, resident of Peshawar was also found infected with virus.The WHO has declared the spread of polio an international public health emergency and identified Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon as having allowed the virus to spread beyond their borders. It recommended that those three governments require citizens to obtain a certificate proving they have been vaccinated for polio before traveling abroad. Following the WHO warnings, Health Minister Saira Afzal Tarar said the restrictions will be a heavy burden but Pakistan is implementing emergency measures to comply.American agents who tracked and killed Osama Bin Laden used a polio vaccination campaign as cover while they carried out their mission. It has since given the Taliban reason to distrust anyone linked to the anti-polio campaigns as the Taliban accused vaccination teams of being American spies and of sterilising children with the vaccine.This news was published in The Nation newspaper.
