Punjab battling for conquering illiteracy: Sarwar

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar who is Chancellor public sector universities, has said that to continue striving for excellence in the education, the Punjab government is working on multiple fronts to make sure for staying at the top in education and achieve the plans and objectives set forth by the government. He was addressing fourth convocation of the Fiasalabad GC University here Monday.
The governor said that the Punjab government had attached great importance with the primary education and had raised the slogan of "Education for All," adding that he was very much delighted to know that the GCUF was actively participating in this project. He said that the GC University always rose to occasions of outreach by helping earthquake rehabilitation in 2005, rendering help to flood victims in 2010 and setting up endowment fund for scholarships for the earthquake effected people of Baluchistan.
Ch Sarwar said that he was son of the soil and graduated from the GC College Faisalabad which had now attained the status of a University and was imparting quality education to students. He said that the GC University had attained a prestigious height in ranking of World Universities and it would attain more prestigious alleviation in education sector of the country.
The Punjab governor continued that that the Universities must strive to become wells from which imagination, invention and creativity were drown to benefit society and where future leaders learn lessons and make discoveries and innovation for national prosperity in the coming centuries. He said that during the founding years, the Government College University, had made remarkable contribution to the national intellectual and professional capabilities and produce high-skills for the country.
He appreciated the imparting of best possible education to students, enabling them to successfully enter the workforce and with the intellectual skills that make it possible for them to be lifelong learners. He said that while the University degree was a valuable asset, the rapidly changing world in which we live in requires us to constantly retrain ourselves to satisfy our life and work ambitions. The students shall have to craft new career directions as opportunities emerge and develop new knowledge and skills as their career evolves.
The governor said that good leadership comes from transforming people so that they should also become leaders and decision makers. Only through this way, you will have to craft new career and emerging opportunities and thus develop new knowledge and skills. He said that since many of the out-going students will shortly enter into the leadership role, hence they should play pivotal role to reform the society and uplift the down-trodden and poor segments of the society.
The Chancellor also conferred degrees to passing-out GCUF students.
Earlier, in his address of welcome, GCUF Vice Chancellor Dr Zakir Hussain said that Punjab Governor Ch Sarwar had made a successful national fund campaign to raise 1 million sterling Pounds and built 1000 new home for flood victims of 2010 in Pakistan. He said that using his influence, the governor established 3 state-of-the art hospitals in rural areas of Pakistan with the help of business and industrial community and added to the stature of university as an important productive pillar of the society.
He presented a total of 5297 students graduating with PhD, MPhil, Master and Bachelor Degrees in various fields in today's colourful graduation ceremony. The VC told that 63 graduates of the convocation have attained first positions in their respective disciplines He said that the University started some new programs and departments and added that the institute of English and modern languages is one of these programs. He said that few new departments of the university are continuing education in allied medical sciences which offer programs related to textile, fashion, computer, garments and nutrition.
