Trains collide near Landhi, Karachi; at least 19 dead, 50 injured

Two trains collided today in Landhi area near Karachi killing at least 19 and injuring 50, reported Waqt News.

The accident occurred around 7:15 AM today when Zakaria express crashed into Fareed express, which was stationed near Jumah Goth, Landhi derailing and badly damaging three carriages that caused most of the deaths and injuries.

Earlier reports said the accident occurred when Zakaria express coming from Multan, was given a false green signal but Minister of Pakistan Khwaja Saad Rafique addressing a press conference later in the day stated that the accident occured due to incompetence of Zakaria express' driver. Khwaja Saad Rafique also announced that compensation of Rs. 1.5 million would be given to families of the dead, while Rs. 3 lakh would be given to those injured. 

Rescue sources including Rangers and Pakistan army have reached the area and the injured, most of whom reportedly comprise of women and children, are currently being shifted to Jinnah hospital.

Train traffic towards Karachi has been temporarily suspended.
