Govt, HEC urged to resolve UoM students problems

LOWER DIR - Students of the University of Malakand (UoM) on Sunday said that they were faced with numerous problems but the university administration was taking no step to resolve their grievances. Addressing a news conference at Timergara Press Club, the students leaders Rizwanullah, Jamshid Ghazal, Gauhar Rahman, Aminullah and others said that students lacked clean drinking water in hostels due to which they - both male and female students - had been suffering from various waterborne diseases. They said that new girls hostel was not completed despite passage of seven years while 10 to 12 girls students were being forced to stay in single rooms. They said due to prolonged power outages and absence of any alternative means they had been facing problems in their studies. The university administration has increased its non-developmental expenditure many folds. Last year, the varsity presented a Rs 160 million deficit budget, while this year the deficit reached Rs 360 million, they said, adding that it was a clear example of increase in its expenditures. They said students were being forced to pay extra expenses in order to reduce the deficit. They said that central library and university bookshops had been closed for the last two weeks owing to a scandal. They said the students had no reference books for their studies. The varsity premises has been turned into a police station and students are threatened of disciplinary actions in case of protests, they said, adding the action committee of the Muttahida Tulba Mahaz sought to meet with the vice chancellor and provost but they had no time to listen to it. The construction of academic block, they said had been started in 2009, but it was still incomplete. They said the girls hostel had no mess for female students and they were being forced to bring dinner from a distance place. The students leaders demanded of the president, governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, secretary education and high authorities of HEC to take notice of these problems and direct the university administration to resolve them on priority basis. Jail inmate commits suicide An inmate of Central Jail, Peshawar, committed suicide by plunging into a well inside the jail here on Sunday morning. Sources said that an 85-year-old detainee Ajab Khan, who according to police was mentally upset, jumped into a deep well inside the jail and was resultantly killed on the spot. Making hectic efforts, the police retrieved his dead body and took it to mortuary for post mortem. On the other hand, district Magistrate Zia-ud-Din ordered a high level enquiry into the incident and asked the police to form an investigation team for the case.
