SC restores Punjab Assembly membership of PML-N's Muhammad Hanif

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has set aside Election Tribunal (ET) decision   and restored membership of Punjab Assembly (PA) in respect of Chaudhry Muhammad Hanif, a PML-N MPA (member of Punjab Assembly) in fake degree case.

Chaudhry Hanif was elected as MPA on PML-N ticket from PP-226 Sahiwal. Saqib Gujjar, a rival candidate to Chaudhry Hanif had challenged the latter’s degree and ET had disqualified Chaudhry Hanif on December 20, 2014 for holding fake degree.

A 3-member bench of SC presided over by Chief Justice Anwar Zahir Jamali took up the case for hearing Monday. Counsel for independent candidate Saqib Gujjar told the court that LLB degree held by Chaudhry Muhammad Hanif was fake.

Counsel for Chaudhry Hanif that his client’s degree was real and was verified by Higher Education Commission ( HEC). Any question of degree being fake stands ruled out. Therefore, his client membership of assembly be restored, he prayed.

The court while hearing the arguments from both sides nullified the ET December 20, 2014 decision and restored membership of Punjab Assembly in respect of  Chaudhry Muhammad Hanif.
