Governor acknowledges South Punjab varsities’ role

Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana said that the universities in Southern Punjab were playing a vital role in socio-economic development of the region.
Newly established women’s universities in Multan and Bahawalpur reflect priority of the government in welfare and development of the local women, he said. The governor was exchanging views with Prof Dr Qaiser Mushtaq, the vice chancellor of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur at the Governor House Lahore.
The governor said that he was keen about the development of these universities and will soon visit to review and academic and development activities and solve problems. He added that higher education sector was the top priority of both federal and provincial governments. Laptop scheme, fee reimbursement programme and PEEF scholarships are a few examples of measure taken for student’s welfare, he said.
On the occasion, Dr Qaiser briefed the chancellor about various administrative and academic steps taken at the Government Sadiq College Women University. He said that the Higher Education Commission has recently issued provisional NOC to the university.
“The Finance and Planning Committee has prepared the annual budget to be submitted to syndicate for approval. Constituent bodies like selection boards, board of faculties, academic council and departmental boards of studies have been established. New semester calendar and semester rules have been implemented. A state-of-the-art and modern online admission system has been framed and degree of the university is also designed. Delayed matters of salaries of visiting faculty, extension in contract of non teaching employees and new salary structure as per basic pay scale have been resolved and appointment of PhD faculty is also underway,” he told the chancellor.
A new department of estate care and space management has been also established while new academic block and cafeteria is also complete, he said. The governor appreciated these steps taken in a short period of time and assured his full support for development of the Women University of Bahawalpur. The Vice Chancellor also briefed the chancellor about various matters of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur.
