HAFIZABAD - Scores of Gepco workers observed a complete strike to voice their resentment against the proposed privatisation of power distribution companies.
They also took out a rally which was led by WAPDA Hydro-Electric Workers Union Zonal Chairman Malik Shafqat Mehmood Awan and General Secretary Abdul Razzaq Mughal. They raised slogans against the government and declared that the workers would not tolerate privatisation, which, they said, would be against the interests of workers and consumers. They threatened that if the proposal regarding privatisation was not withdrawn they would be constrained to resort to indefinite strike.
SIX STUDENTS HURT: Nine persons including six girl students were seriously injured when two school vans collided head-on near Kaleki Mandi due to poor visibility owing to dense fog early Tuesday morning.
According to Rescue source, two speeding vans carrying students when reached near Kaleki Mandi dashed against each other due to poor visibility. Resultantly six girl student including Ateeqa Arooj, Um-e-Farwa, Jubaira, Rubi, two teachers and a van driver Talib Hussain were seriously injured. They were shifted to RHC Kaleki Mandi and DHQ Hospital Hafizabad where condition of two of them is said to be critical.
building for GIC: A large number of students of the Government Institute of Commerce (GIC) have called on the government to arrange for the building for the institute to avert undue interruption in the education students.
According to the GIC management, the institute has been housed in a rented-building since 1986 and now owner of the building has served a notice for the eviction of the building as a result of which the students and management of the institute were too much disturbed and disappointed.
Currently more than 150 students are studying in the institute and the notice has caused uncertainty over the future of the students. They appealed to the Commissioner Gujranwala, the Hafizabad DCO and other higher officers to provide permanent building to the institution so that their education would not suffer.
