ISLAMABAD - The National Institute of Health (NIH) confirmed two new type-1 wild poliovirus cases one each from Balochistan (district Loralai) and Sindh (district Badin) provinces Monday. This brings the total number of polio cases countrywide in 2011 so far to 100 (99 type-1 cases and 1 type-3 case). The total number of infected districts/towns/tribal agencies/areas remains 37 in 2011. This is the second polio case reported this year from district Loralai from the same union council within a period of almost two weeks indicating significant immunity gap in the area. Since Loralai is situated outside the persistent transmission zones, an aggressive case response vaccination campaign should be conducted as per recommendation of the technical advisory group for Polio Eradication in Pakistan and Afghanistan. There is an ongoing outbreak in the central/southern Sindh region, for almost a year indicating re-established wild poliovirus circulation in the area due to substantial immunity gap. It is important to highlight that 5 districts of Sindh including Badin are yet to conduct the September SNIDs (tentatively planned in second week of October) due to floods.
