ISLAMABAD - Heavy contingent of police on Friday evening raided a telecom company headquarters to disperse its protesting employees and uproot their protesting camp. Police baton charged them while the telecom companys workers in retaliation pelted stones on policemen, injuring about eight police officials. The sounds of aerial firing were also heard while many polices vehicles were parked around the telecom companys building and heavy contingent of police had surrounded it. The police arrested around 35 employees of the company till night including the union leaders of the telecom company. The telecom companys employees have been peacefully protesting for the last four days and they had set a protesting camp inside the main building for not getting 50 percent increase in their salaries as announced by the Federal Government in the fiscal budget for 2010-11. An official of the telecom company on condition of the anonymity informed this correspondent that the heavy contingent of police surrounded the main building after Iftar in order to uproot the protesting camp. As soon as the telecom company employees got information that police had raided the building to get control of it, the employees became infuriated and scuffles started taking palace between them and the police, he added. However, Capt. Liaquat Ali Malik, SP, Sadar Circle informed this scribe that police had come to arrest the protesting telecom companys employees, as they wanted to get themselves arrested voluntarily under a protesting move. But after a rumour that police had come to take control of the building and someone from an undisclosed place started aerial firing, he added. He also informed that the employees started pelting stones on policemen and ultimately police had to use fore against them. He also confirmed arrest of 35 staffers of the telecom company. To a question, the SP said that the police would go by the book and the arrested persons would be dealt according to the law.
