KARACHI - MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Wednesday directed the party legislators to submit their resignations from the assemblies and the Senate to Coordination Committee Deputy Convener Dr Nusrat Shaukat.Coordination Committee member Ameen-ul-Haq, talking to The Nation, confirmed that on the direction of the party chief, MQM legislators – 25 National Assembly members, 51 Sindh Assembly members and seven senators – have submitted their resignations to Deputy Convener Dr Nusrat Shaukat at the party headquarters, Nine Zero. He said the party’s general workers meeting had been postponed due to the busy schedule of the MQM chief. Now he would address the workers on Thursday (today) evening.The MQM resignations come at a time when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) are holding protests and sit-ins against the current political system and are demanding resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose government they call the outcome of a rigged election. PTI lawmakers have submitted their resignations from National, Punjab and Sindh Assemblies.The MQM chief, while talking to a private news channel on Wednesday, gave one-week deadline to the assemblies and the Senate to improve their conduct and working, directing the party legislators to submit their resignation to the Coordination Committee deputy convener. “It is only a drama to befool the nation,” Altaf said, referring to the joint session of the Parliament that is underway to discuss the prevailing political crisis. He said there was no constitution and law in the country, adding the MQM could not be a part of this corrupt and rotten system.He said the Parliament’s session was called only for delivering speeches and fearing any possible intervention by the army. “The Parliament cannot solve the people’s problems,” he declared.Altaf said no MQM members could become part of such assemblies and gave one week to the members of the Parliament to behave otherwise his lawmakers would tender their resignations.The MQM chief stated that he was already sad and worried about the country’s prevailing political crisis. He also expressed anger over ‘irresponsible’ and ‘selfish’ behavior of senior party members. Altaf Hussain said he would request the MQM workers to relieve him of the party leadership.Meanwhile, the MQM workers and sympathisers have started sending faxes to Altaf’s London secretariat, rejecting his decision to quit the party leadership. The party activists said the followers of MQM would not accept it at any cost and urged the party chief not to quit the slot.The move follows as the MQM chief expressed anger over the irresponsible and opportunistic attitude of some key party leaders during the current critical situation of the country.A major reshuffle is being expected in the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) coordination committee and the other party structure as after MQM chief expressed annoyance over the irresponsible attitude of party senior leaders in handling the current critical political situation of the country.Sources privy to the matter said various top members of the MQM Coordination Committee would be replaced during the process of reshuffling. They further said the current committee had failed to play an effective role in resolving the deadlock created after the sit-ins of the protesting parties in the federal capital of the country and the committee formed on the direction of the MQM chief to negotiate with the marchers’ leaders and the ruling government returned to Karachi without making any valuable efforts to defuse the tension.Earlier, MQM’s London-based Senior Deputy Convener Nadeem Nusrat, took medical leave. It is considered that he has been temporarily replaced. Similarly, Deputy Convener Engineer Nasir Jamal and Dr Sagheer Ahmed were also removed from the decision-making committee of the party, keeping in view their other responsibilities. The sources further said the Coordination Committee member, Amir Khan, would be given an important portfolio in the body after reshuffling.It is pertinent to mention that MQM chief Altaf Hussain has repeatedly expressed his disappointment over the performance of the party office-bearers and announced his resignation which he withdrew on the request of the party leaders and workers.This news was published in The Nation newspaper.
