Blast derails Night Coach, kills two

KARACHI - At least two people were killed and dozens wounded in a bomb blast targeting the Lahore-bound Night Coach of Pakistan Railways near Ghaghar Phatak area, 35 kilometres from Landhi Junction in Karachi.
The train carrying hundreds of passengers left Karachi Cantt Station at 7:30pm. As it passed through the desert area located between the Ghaghar Phatak and Landhi, a powerful blast ripped through the rail track. The high intensity blast turned turtle seven bogies of the train. Two of the bogies were destroyed completely, said Divisional Superintendent Sindh Maqsoodun Nabi when contacted.
Eye witnesses said rescuers of various welfare organisations, law enforcers and staff of railway reached the site one hour late. They said authorities failed to handle the situation as rescuers shifted victims to different hospitals. Most of the ill-fated injured passengers were shifted to the 100-bed Gharo Civil Hospital Landhi and other district hospitals while some of the victims were rushed to Karachi. Witnesses claimed that two people including a minor girl had been killed on the spot while dozens were injured with few of them seriously. Railway authorities were yet to confirm the number of casualties.
SP Malir Rao Anwar told The Nation that police contingents were rushed to the spot to rescue the victims and help the railway police.
Witnesses said residents of the surrounding areas reached the scene and rescued the victims immediately but they lacked proper coordination.
DS Railways Maqsood said traffic for the trains had been suspended till repairing of the track and clearing the railway line. Passengers of other trains present at various stations demanded reimbursement of their ticket amounts but railways authorities could not do much to facilitate them. Passengers who were on their way to Karachi were stopped at Hyderabad and Kotri Stations. Maqsood said a train was sent to the incident site with mobile hospital to take passengers to Karachi while rest of the injured were shifted to other hospitals of the district.
