Karachi- Secretary General Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Dr Mirza Ali Azhar, demanded today that the federal government should immediately dissolve Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) as per the recommendations of the Standing Committee of National Assembly on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSR&C).
He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at PMA House Karachi. Other PMA leaders Dr Shershah Syed, Dr Muhammad Idrees Adhi, Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad and Dr Qazi M Wasiq were also present.
Dr Mirza added that a meeting of Standing Committee of National Assembly on NHSR&C was held on 28th February 2014. He said committee members discussed the issues of PMDC including the complaints of irregularities, malpractices and flouting the court orders. He said committee member recommended some measures including the PMDC election conducted in April 2013 to be declared null and void. He demanded that fresh elections be conducted within 100 days by an independent and professional committee.
He said that the meeting of the council on 5th August, 2013 should be declared illegal and all office-bearers and committee members are occupying their offices illegally. He asked the ministry to take action against the members attending the illegal meetings and register a case against the beneficiaries. The NHSR&C should take legal action against Raja Amjad Mehmood by ordering his suspension for flouting court orders and declare all the decisions taken by the caretaker and interim setups illegal, null and void.
He said PMA has demanded that all the recommendations of the Standing Committee should be immediately accepted and implemented. He said PMDC should work as an independent and autonomous body, free from financial corruption so that it improves the regulation of medical education and training in Pakistan.
