Malala’s reconstructive surgery in UAE

DUBAI - Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot a month ago will soon undergo reconstructive surgery in the United Kingdom, said Pakistan's Ambassador to United Arab Emirates (UAE) Jamil Ahmad Khan on Sunday. While speaking to Khaleej Times, Khan said surgery could be done ‘within weeks’. "Doctors just want to make sure her brain swelling has normalised enough and is ready to accept a patch," he said.He also said she was walking, talking and even reading at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where she was flown in an air ambulance provided by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Zaid for treatment after being shot at close range by a Pakistani Taliban on October 9 in Mingora. Malala, who the Taliban said was punished for studying, barely survived the attack with the bullet travelling through her head, neck and then lodging in her shoulder.Ambassador Khan said he had spoken on Saturday at length to Malala's father Ziauddin Yousafzai and the Pakistan's ambassador to UK. "With good wishes from all of the nation and world, Malala will bounce back with the same resolve," he added."Zia has also resolved to take his daughter back to education and also to restart his school," said Khan. Pakistan Taliban later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a punishment for campaigning for the rights of girls to go to school.Khan said while addressing a debate on girls' right to education organised by Pakistan Professionals Wing (PPW), "Everyone is happy to see this exuberant child of our country." He said Malala was a movement that would be followed by the 70 million children currently studying in Pakistan. "The struggle will pay its dividends," he said, while encouraging students to focus on studies."Extremist mindsets cannot deter Pakistani students from studying," he added.Munir Mahmood, Chairman of PPF, said that the October 9 incident has further strengthened the people's determination to provide education to children. "The best way to pay tribute to Malala, who is a role model in spreading education among girls in Pakistan's backward areas, is by promoting and spreading education with dedication."Malala has recently been awarded National Peace Prize by Pakistan for defending her motherland's reputation and fighting for children's rights and education.TheNation Monitoring adds: Daughter of President AsiF Ali Zardari, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari telephoned Malala Yousafzai and enquired after her health, reported a private TV channel on Sunday.Talking to media, Aseefa said Malala thanked President Zardari for providing best available medical facilities. “President, Bilawal Bhutto, Bakhtawar Bhutto and the whole Pakistani nation are praying for the recovery of Malala Yousafzai,” she said. The president’s daughter further hoped that the peace activist would continue to work in accomplishing her mission after recovering from the bullet wounds.
