‘Neither govt nor political parties ready for LG polls’

QUETTA - National Party acting president Senator Mir Hasil Bizenjo said that neither the circumstances are ripe for the conduct of local bodies’ elections in Balochistan on December 7 nor the political parties are mentally prepared in this regard. However, he said, it is the order of the Supreme Court to hold LG elections and, therefore, his party would take part in the electoral process.
He said this while addressing a news conference at the Press Club here Monday. He was flanked by the spokesman of CM Jan Muhammad Buledi, Health Minister Rehmat Baloch and other party members.
He said that the government and political parties have reservations on the announced schedule as they are not prepared for the elections, adding that due to the winter season, many people have migrated to other districts and the recent earthquake has flattened an entire district. “Therefore, the masses cannot take part in the elections fully,” he said. However, the Supreme Court order in this regard is constitutional and “we’ll take part in the elections,” he added. He said that they tried their best to persuade the apex court that atmosphere was not ripe for the conduct of LG elections in the province.
Responding to a question regarding the missing persons, he said that wherever the Supreme Court can show its authority, it sacks even a prime minister and president and where it cannot, it only adjourns the proceedings by announcing further dates.
On the other hand, addressing a news conference at the Press Club, JUI-Ideological leader Amir Maulvi Muhammad Hanif demanded the LG polls should be postponed till the process of demarcation of constituencies and proper modification of electoral lists is completed.
He claimed that incompliance with the orders of the apex court before May 11, 2013, it was decided that for holding transparent elections, the computerised electoral lists would be prepared but owing to corruption, irresponsibility and dishonesty, the electoral lists could not be rectified properly. Therefore, he said that parties had raised voice against alleged rigging in the May 11 elections and a number of applications were submitted to election commission.
The leader feared that if the electoral lists were not modified and demarcations process was not completed before the LG Polls, the people would doubt the electoral results.
