Sindh minister passes away

KARACHI - PPP leader and Sindh Minister for Special Education Advocate Muhammad Rafique Engineer passed away here on Tuesday morning. He suffered a heart attack and was taken to a private hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.He was elected as member of Sindh Assembly consecutively in 2002 and sitting Assembly in 2008 on PPP ticket from PS-109 Lyari area of Karachi 21. When party came into power, he was appointed as Minister for Katchi Abadis Department in Sindh Government. After three years, he was given portfolio of Archives Department with additional charge of Special Education. Muhammad Rafique Engineer, who joined PPP from his college days as activist of the Sindh Peoples Student Federation and got prominent place in the party’s Karachi chapter. Born in 1961 in Thatta, late Minister was active in the struggle of Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) during the regime of Ziaul Haq and activated the students on the platform from the People Students Federation.He completed his early education and became engineer. Later, he completed LLB from Urdu Law College in Karachi and started practicing law. During practice of law, he was active in the party and became the General Secretary of the Peoples Youth Wing’s Karachi division and later served as the General Secretary of the party’s Karachi wing.After hearing the news of his death, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, Finance Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, other PPP leaders and workers reached at the residence of Rafiq Engineer and offered condolences with his family members. Rafique Engineer has left behind wife, one son and one daughter.Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, MQM chief Altaf Hussain and others in their condolence messages offered Fateha. A delegation led by Abdul Haseeb reached at the residence of the deceased and offered Fateha with the family. Meanwhile, the body of late Minister was moved to Chakiwara for his funeral prayers at Eidgah ground in Lyari in the evening of Tuesday. Bilawal House spokesman in a condolence message issued here said that the deceased was the son of a labourer and he had devoted his entire life for the PPP and Bhutto family. PPP Ministers, leaders, others participated in the funeral prayers of Rafique Engineer.
