ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday ordered that the culprits behind the murder of Balochistan MPA Mir Bakhtiar Domki’s wife and daughter be arrested by February 10.Hearing the petition of gruesome murder in Karachi last week, the apex court observed that the Sindh government had failed to maintain law and order in the province and ordered the IG Sindh Police to arrest the killers within four days.Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heading a three-member bench comprising Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez, asked the Sindh advocate general and IGP; “We are not satisfied with your performance as the report submitted by you is not satisfactory.” Inspector General of Sindh Police Mushtaq Ahmed Shah and the Advocate General Sindh Fateh Malik, appearing before the court, submitted a report about the murders.The court noted that no effective progress had been made by the police to arrest the culprits involved in the crime. The chief justice said it is one of the most sensitive incidents having its own repercussions on the situation prevailing in the Balochistan, which is deteriorating day-by-day. The chief justice said that Sindh IGP should have taken all necessary steps in tracing the offenders and causing their arrest. The bench was hearing a constitutional petition filed by President Balochistan High Court Bar Association regarding gruesome murder of wife and daughter of Mir Bakhtiar Domki in Karachi.Female family members of MPA-Mir Bukhtiar Domki along with driver were killed in Karachi’s Clifton area on January 30. The incident impacted the Balochistan situation negatively and a complete shutterdown strike was observed in the province. There were hues and cries for the reasons that innocent female family members of Mir Bakhtiar Domki had been targeted.The IGP informed the court that extensive efforts were being made and he was confident of arresting the culprits involved in the crime. He told the court that it was not a robbery case as the jewellery worn by the lady was not taken away after murder. He said the incident was a targeted killing and not a street crime. The maidservant, who survived in the incident, was not in a position to give statement, he added.The IGP said that a high power team had been constituted comprising senior officers to trace out the killers of Domki’s wife and daughter, adding that it was a very complicated case.He requested the court that he needed some time to do the needful. Justice Khilji Arif Hussain asked IGP to keep in view the foreign elements behind the incident who were seeking to disturb peace in the country.The court adjourned the hearing till February 10. The AG and the Sindh IG were directed to appear in-person on the next date of hearing.The IGP said that President Asif Ali Zardari had spoken to him on the phone regarding the issue. He informed the court that they had traced out the killers of three lawyers in Karachi.Earlier, Advocate General Balochistan Amanullah Kanarani submitted a daily situation report about the Balochistan situation. He claimed no privilege and confidentiality for the same. Attorney General Maulvi Anwaul Haq stated that he could not procure reports from the MI and ISI regarding the Balochistan law and order. He, however, requested for some time to do the needful.The chief justice said that the government should take the Balochistan situation seriously as it was a part of Pakistan. The CJP said that they had empowered the police and Rangers to control unrest in Karachi, adding there was need to depoliticise the police.
