LAHORE - Following the sudden assassination of Salmaan Taseer, a very outspoken Governor in Punjabs political history, PPPs top leadership is in a fix over appointment of new Governor, as several names are under consideration but politically speaking every one has his merits and demerits. Before deciding about a new name for Punjabs Governorship, the main question afflicting the mind of President Asif Ali Zardari and his close aides is take a policy decision regarding their partys future working relationship with the PML-N with whom they are not only coalition partners in the province; they also need Nawaz partys help at the moment to sustain their govt. Can PPP afford to have a hawkish Governor like Salmaan Taseer under the current circumstances? The PPP will have to address this basic question first before deciding about the new Governor. In other words, it is actually the relationship with PML-N which is going to determine the new name for the coveted office. If the PPP decides to be on the confrontational course with the Nawaz party and give it tough time in Punjab, there could be no better choice than Dr. Babar Awan who has already made his mark on his bosss mind by his fiery speeches against Sharifs. But Awan already has an important assignment as Federal Law Minister, and President will have to find his replacement first in the Centre which is also a difficult decision to be made. The person most suited for the job from PML-Ns point of view is Jehangir Badr, partys central Secretary General. But many believe he is not in the good books of party Co-Chairman and even his current assignment is in danger. Aitzaz Ahsan will also be acceptable to the Sharifs as new Punjab Governor but he too is facing a similar problem. According to PPP sources, the President may also like to have Zaka Ashraf in Punjab, an old friend of him, if Babar Awan is not considered for the slot to please the PML-N leadership. The names of Qasim Zia, Khawaja Tariq Rahim, Asif Hashmi, Mian Misbahur Rehman and Begum Amna Taseer are also making rounds in political circles as probable candidates. Sardar Latif Khosa is another aspirant and may prove a dark horse in the race for Punjab Governorship.
