BAHAWALPUR
Speakers at a seminar educated the participants including teachers and students on breast cancer and stressed a need for collective efforts to save the women from the chronic disease.
Held at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, the seminar was organised by the Higher Education Commission, Pink Ribbon Campaign Pakistan and the IUB to educate the participants about the disease.
“Breast cancer is a chronic disease and spreading rapidly in Pakistan and other Asian countries due to unawareness but it can be cured if diagnosed at early stage so we have to launch a comprehensive campaign in this regard to raise awareness,” they said.
The speakers included Dr Asiya Shahid of Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Dr Mamuna Ghani, and other experts. They said that due to expensive treatment and lack of knowledge, one from every nine cases of breast cancer is reported in Pakistan thus we have to work on it seriously. They urged the media and educational institutes to come forward and join hands to fight against this chronic disease as both the sectors could help develop awareness about it. They said backwardness, financial problems and less diagnostic and treatment facilities are the major causes of this rapidly growing disease which needs special attention of all the sectors concerned to control it.
Later, Dr Asiya Shahid informed the audience about the symptoms, diagnosing process and treatment of breast cancer. Around 200 students and faculty members of the university attended the seminar.
