PESHAWAR - Affiliated with the ruling Awami National Party (ANP), member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from Kohistan district, Maulana Obaidullah died of cardiac arrest on Friday. He was 57. Almost three days back, Maulana Obaidullah was in Swat where his condition worsened instantly and was shifted to Islamabad for treatment. He, however, breathed his lost due to his heart failure. Wearing karakul cap regularly, Maulana Obaidullah, was a prominent social, political and a religious figure from Kohistan. Having active political role in the area, he was the younger brother of late Maulana Abdul Baqi, who was minister in the cabinet of governor Lt-Gen Fazle Haq in 1980s. In 2008 elections, he while contesting from Kohistan Qaumi Itehad had won his seat from KP-61-Kohistan-I. He later announced backing ANP that has been ruling the province since last polls. He was affiliated with the ANP till his death. Despite actively talking part in KP assembly proceedings, the late Maulana Obaidullah had happened to be a calm and cool person. Having a desire to serve people of his area, he had also been district Nazim Kohistan for four years during general Perviz Musharrafs era. Indeed, he has been hailing from the poorest and most deprived Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but interestingly, he was the richest politician in the provincial assembly as he owns assets worth Rs4.62 billion, it was revealed the statements of assets that he had submitted to Election Commission of Pakistan after winning 2008 elections. His Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered in Abbottabad (today) Saturday morning, where he would also be buried. He had survived a widow and four sons.
