Polio cases set alarm bells ringing

OUR STAFF REPORTER RAHIM YAR KHAN - The spread of polio virus has set alarm bells ringing in Pakistan as 80 cases were reported during the current year, said World Health Organisation representative Dr Nasir Abidi on Wednesday. He stated this during a meeting held to review arrangements for three-day anti-polio campaign starting from September 19. Dr Nasir said that as many as 144 polio cases were reported in Pakistan last year which was highest in 10 years. He said this year 34 polio cases were reported in Balochistan province, 31 in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, 14 in Sindh and one in Gilgat-Baltistan. He said Punjab was thought to be polio-free province since 2005 however some of its districts including Rahim Yar Khan are at high risk due to their geographical location. He said efforts for eradication of this deadly disease were underway in four countries - Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
