Govt summersault surprises PPP lawmakers

KARACHI - The PPP leaders and lawmakers of Sindh have expressed surprise over sudden decision of rolling back of commissionerate system through ordinances. However, some of the legislators announced not to vote in favour of local government system 2001, which was introduced by the former military dictator retied General Pervez Musharraf. During a chat with TheNation, number of lawmakers and leaders were not aware of the happenings at the government level and they expressed their dissatisfaction over the recent steps taken by the party leadership, which caused resentment in the masses of the province against the party. When contacted, former senator and General Secretary of ruling PPP Sindh chapter Taj Haider said that Sindh local government ordinance 2001 was in a contradiction with Constitution of Pakistan. The reason of reintroducing the law was to contain the violence and continue the reconciliation policy with all the political forces. He urged all the parliamentary parties to sit on the table to develop a consensus on the new law. He hoped that all the parliamentary parties in Sindh Assembly would reach on consensus for new law of local government. PPPs MPA Sardar Ahmed Yar Pitafi went on to say that revival of former military dictator Musharrafs local government system 2001 was unfair with the people of Sindh. He termed the recent decision of his government was immoral and against the wishes of the people of Sindh, which needed to review immediately. The PPP lawmakers told The Nation that he is alongside with the people of Sindh in their protest against wrong decisions of the government and whenever these ordinances come in the assembly will vote against them. Another lawmaker of PPP Tariq Masood Arain also termed the rolling back of commissionerate system which passed by the Sindh Assembly as unjustified and unfair decision, adding that he will not go against the decision of party leadership. Sindh Assemblys Public Accounts Committee member and PPP MPA Haji Mujadad Isran was of the view that now uniform system of local government has been established all over the province, so there is no need make hue and cry against it. He said that party has not taken a decision whether it will continue the Musharrafs local government or will bring another system in the province, however whatever steps taken he will be alongside the party leadership. Another provincial lawmaker of PPP Agha Taimor Talpur admitted that party had abolished the Musharrafs local government system 2001 in haste, while now another decision of reviving it also took in haste. He opined that without knowing the history and nature of the people of Sindh, Senator Babar Awan took wrong decision of accepting MQMs demand for adopting two administrative systems in the province, which now corrected with prompt and timely action of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. On the other side, on the call given by Awami Tehreek and other nationalist parties, the shutter down strike was observed allover the province on Monday, besides sit-ins were also staged in front of PPP ministers and lawmakers in the Hyderabad and other cities of the province. The extreme reaction forced the PPP government to issue ordinance for uniform local government system in the province.
