Khyber Agency health official accused of corruption

PESHAWAR -  President Paramedics Association Khyber Agency Khan Mir accused Agency Surgeon Dr Niaz Afridi for alleged involvement in massive corruption and misuse of powers, and demanded stern legal action against the official.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Khan Mir alleged that the incumbent Agency Surgeon Dr Niaz Afridi had embezzled funds allocated for public healthcare in Khyber Agency.

He said Deputy Secretary Fata Meraj Khan had initiated an inquiry against Dr Afridi on directives of Additional Chief Secretary Fata some seven month ago, for alleged misappropriations in funds, which was later made public through media.

As a result of the inquiry, Khan Mir further said, departmental action was taken against a clerk, but the main accused managed to save his skin. He also said health employees were deprived from their salaries since June, as the cash was withdrawn by the accused agency surgeon. He also alleged that in official record a special measles campaign was launched in Khyber Agency, but practically no single child was vaccination in Tehsil Bara and Tirah valley, as the agency surgeon had misappropriated the funds.

Similarly, the agency surgeon also withdrew one-time salary of a lady health visitor from different locations during last year, he alleged.

Besides, the agency surgeon has been involved in misbehaving with staff members and torturing and abusing some of them. The agency surgeon resort to issuing threats and warnings if an employee puts forth even a legitimate demand, Khanmir added. He stressed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and ACS Fata to take notice of the alleged corruption and misuse of powers by the agency surgeon and dismiss him from his position.
