Ruling PPP to face severe resistance, warn allies

LAHORE – The PML-Q and MQM, coalition partners of the PPP, have conveyed to their major partner that renaming Quaid-i-Azam Post Graduate Medical College (QAPGMC) after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto will be unacceptable to them. The PPP drafted a bill last month to grant the university status to Quaid-i-Azam Post Graduate Medical College under the proposed name of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Shaheed Medical University. Not only the opposition parties but the coalition partners also refused to back the proposal.Talking to TheNation, PML-Q MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram said: “PML-Q will not accept the renaming of Quaid-i-Azam Post Graduate Medical College under any pretext. It is highly irresponsible move of the PPP to change the name of the institution named after the founder of Pakistan. “Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a great leader and the PPP look for other options to naming a national institution after him but replacing the name of Quaid-i-Azam with Bhutto’s under any claim will bring uncontrollable commotion for the PPP inside and outside the Parliament.”Waqas said that he wondered that who in the PPP had made such a ludicrous plan to doom his own party. Haider Abbas Rizvi, veteran MQM parliamentarian, said: “The MQM will not allow changing the name of the institution named after the founding father of the country”. I think the draft bill has been made in haste by the people who were not aware of the sensitivity of dragging the name of founding father for gaining petty political targets.” Rizvi remarked that PPP could easily get other options to honour the founding chairman of the party, adding that the drafters of the bill did not think for a minute about the repercussions of their unwise move. However, ANP spokesman Zahid Khan, another coalition partner of the PPP, did not oppose the proposal and cautiously said that his party would clear its stance after the tabling of the bill in parliament. PML-N central leader Iqbal Zafar Jhagra said: “Renaming the institution named after founder of Pakistan under any pretext will be awful and I think that only a foolish person can draft such a bill.”PTI Information Secretary Shafqat Mehmood said: “Though Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a great leader, replacing the name of Quaid-i-Azam with Bhutto’s will be unwise.” He added that the PPP should look for other choices to honour the founding chief of the party.
