Token hunger strike enters 13th day

MIRPUR (AJK) - Dozens of civil society representatives, belonging to Mian Muhammad Town of Mirpur city continued their token hunger strike for 13th consecutive day on Sunday to press the AJK government for early implementation of its plan by signing much-awaited agreement of Rs167 million with SNGPL and for supply of Sui gas to hickly-populated area. The hunger strike camp has been established at central Shaheed Chowk under the auspices of Banhurman (Mian Muhammad Town) Action Committee. The protesters have warned the AJK authorities of converting the ongoing token hunger strike into till-death hunger strike if their demand for supply of gas is not accepted. Led by the elders of area including Muhammad Ramzan Chughtai, Arshad Mahmood Butt, Rashid Mughal and dozens of other like-minded activists remained on the token hunger strike whole the Sunday. Talking to the civil society activists who visited the hunger strike camp from various parts of the city, Ramzan Chughtai and Arshad Mahmood Butt accused the AJK government of delaying tactics. They pointed out that despite the lapse of one and a half months, the AJK government could not even manage signing of a formal agreement between Mirpur Development Authority (MDA) and Sui Natural Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL). They called for immediate signing of the agreement to ensure early supply of gas to Mian Muhammad Town and rest of the gas-neglected residential areas of Mirpur city. The area elders pointed out that the city population including the inmates of Mian Muhammad town were anxiously waiting for gas supply last nine years. Meanwhile, the Mirpur District administration reiterated that since the AJK government has already categorically declared to manage the supply of natural gas to all gas deprived areas of Mirpur city including Mian Muhammad town, the formal agreement between the MDA and SNGPL will be signed any time during next few days at Kashmir House in Islamabad. Mirpur DC Muhammad Tayyeb told The Nation Sunday that since the AJK Law Ministry has yet formally approved the draft of the agreement on Rs167 million proposed plan to be signed between the two institutions for supply of Sui gas to rest of Mirpur city, the agreement is all set to be signed between MDA and the SNGPL in the presence of AJK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan.
