Sindh CM announces Rs10b relief package for affectees

KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Monday announced a relief package, to the tune of Rs10 billion, to help the affectees of roaring River Indus which had left behind a trail of devastation, washing away towns, villages and huge infrastructure in the upper Sindh. The chief minister also said that the financial losses occurred in Sindh due to the flash floods were not less than the other provinces. After getting a briefing from the Irrigation Department on the current situation of flood at Sukkur and Guddu barrages, the Sindh CM told the media persons that the Sindh government had allocated Rs10 billion as relief package for the flood affectees. He announced that employees of the Sindh government would contribute their one day salary to the relief fund, established by the provincial government at the National Bank, while government employees of 17 and above grades, would give their five days salary for the flood affectees. The Provincial Ministers and MPAs belonging to the ruling PPP in Sindh will contribute their one month salary to the relief fund, he added. Qaim Ali Shah maintained that he had apprised Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani of the losses, being occurred due to the floods in Sindh. He pointed out that the financial losses, caused by the flood water in Sindh were not less than the other provinces while still on the rise beyond imagination as the flood waters continued to roaring through Guddu and Sukkur barrages. He pointed out that the Sindh government would initiate a survey to assess the damages. Qaim said that more than 1.5 million people had been affected by floods in Katcha area of Sindh which is spread over an area of 875 miles, adding that after trampling the Katcha areas, the flood water was now heading towards other areas which were being considered to be safer. To a question, the Sindh Chief Minister hoped that super flood of over 1.1 million cusec would easily pass safely from Sukkur Barrage. He was of the opinion that there would be no need to make an artificial breach in the embankments of Sukkur barrage as water level was steadily increasing in the barrage. He urged the people, affected of the floods, to come and register themselves at the relief camps, set up by the Sindh government. Meanwhile, the Sindh Irrigation Department has said that Super Flood is passing through Guddu Barrage with a discharge of 1.114 million cusec and the outflow is likely to remain the same during the next 24 hours. However, the discharge at Sukkur Barrage also crossed the figure of 1.128 million cusec on Monday, which will remain the same in the next 24 hours. According to reports coming from Sukkur and other areas, the water level at Sukkur Barrage reached alarming level as the reservoir level to gauge the water also submerged on Monday. After the increase in the water flow to over 1.1 million cusec at Sukkur Barrage, the Sindh government on Monday declared emergency and summoned Irrigation experts including former federal Secretary for Water and Power Muzmal Qureshi and former Sindh irrigation secretary Idris Rajput at Sukkur. Applying strategy A:- Opening the gates of all the seven canals of Sukkur Barage - Begari Canal, Rohri Canal, Nara Canal, Dadu Canal, Rice Canal, Khaipur East and Khairpur West Canals, which aim at reducing the pressure of water flow at Sukkur barrage, sources told The Nation. However, if any eventuality and damage occur to Sukkur Barrage, the Sindh government will likely to make an 'artificial breach in the embankment of Sukkur Barrage as 'Strategy B, officials said, adding that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Minster Syed Khurshid Shah, Irrigation Minster and other senior officials of the Irrigation Department and experts were in Sukkur to closely monitor the situation. Meanwhile, according to the reports gathered from independent sources in Sukkur, the breaches made in Nara Canal, Bgari Canal, BS feeder and other water distributaries, inundated several villages. The Gauspur Town of District Kashmore was inundated while the flood water is heading for Kandhkot and Thul towns. The people are helpless as there is no evacuation operation from the government in the area, reports said. Presently thousands of people are stuck in the flood water in Kashmore, Kandhkot, Thul, Gauspur, Karmpur, and hundreds of villages.
