40 cheques given to injured cops dishonoured

RAWALPINDI - Forty cheques amounting to Rs 12 million, which were given by Punjab chief minister to policemen who were injured during clashes with Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) workers here at Benazir Bhutto airport on June 23 last, have been dishonoured.
According to details, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif during his visit gave cheques worth Rs 300,000 to each injured policeman as compensation. However, some 40 cheques have been dishonoured by banking authorities, reliable sources revealed to The Nation here on Saturday.
The maimed cops and their families lashed out at the government over this shameless act.
Sources said that this has swelled a wave of panic among the cops who have also registered their strong protest.
Police high-ups have asked cops not to return the cheques to the government; otherwise they would be dismissed from police service, the sources added.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajid Zafar Dall neither received his cell phone nor replied to the text message sent by this scribe on his cell number to get his point of view on the issue.
