Quetta residents stick to their guns

QUETTA - Pakistan Railways employees and residents of Railway Colony staged a demonstration on the third straight day on Thursday against the police operation against encroachments.
Two PR officials sustained wounds when police fired teargas to disperse the demonstrators who attacked DS Railway Office.
The protesters, mostly the residents of Railway Colony, blocked Zarghoon Road and Joint Road and attacked the office of Divisional Superintendent, damaging it and nearby buildings.
The Civil Lines police have registered cases against 300 protesters. However, no arrest was made. Criticising the PPP-led government, Adil Ahmed, a protester, told the media that the ruling party was going against its slogan of “Roti, Kapra aur Makan.
” He said they had been deprived of their homes.  “We applied for railway quarters but authorities denied our request, forcing us to establish homes at the available place,” Ahmed added.
Assistant Commissioner Rafiq Tareen said on December 15, the Supreme Court issued orders to clear encroachments on the Railways lands.
He said the officials gave the residents time to vacate the land before operation.
Police demolished more than 12 houses in the action against encroachments.
