Active participation in volunteer activities urged

RAWALPINDI  - Punjab Emergency Service (PES) Rescue 1122 Director General (DG) Dr Rizwan Naseer has urged the community for active participation in volunteer activities to reduce the increasing number of emergencies.
He also directed all districts officers (DOs) to launch different programmes to mark 2014 as "Year of Prevention". In his regard, information and training wing Rawalpindi launched community based disaster risk reduction (CBDRR) Programme. The programme was consisting of different awareness and training programmes for volunteers so that maximum preventive measures could be initiated through community for safer communities in Rawalpindi. The first training has been imparted to first volunteer student group from Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) at Community Training Centre (CTC) Rescue 1122 on Thursday.  The purpose of such training program was to develop professional approach to volunteers or first responders, so that they could be able to provide professional training in peacetime and provide professional help in case of any untoward incident.
A total of 10 volunteer students of BS (Environmental Sciences) from FJWU received professional training from the trained staff of Emergency Service under supervision of Ms Deeba Shahnaz Akhter, Emergency Officer Information and Training.  The training included Golden Hour Management, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction Management, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, Wound Management, Fracture Management, Burn Injuries, Snake Bites and Electric Shock Management.
Besides that the role of first responder in case of medical emergencies has also been taught through Presentation, Lectures, and Practical Station by trainers of Rescue 1122. The participants have also gone through rescue techniques, emergency moves, fire safety and practical use of fire extinguisher. During two days training sessions the participants have gone through the practical skills and written and practical evaluation process.
Addressing the concluding ceremony, Deeba said that Rescue 1122 appreciate your spirit of volunteerism and looking forward for actual participation of volunteers in their respective areas for Disaster Risk Reduction. She further said that Rescue 1122 would arrange further trainings for volunteers related hazard identification, capacity assessment, mitigation measures at community level so that volunteers could play an effective role at community level, she added.
