Shutter-down strike observed in Quetta

QUETTA - A complete shutter-down strike was observed in Quetta on Thursday against desecration of Holy Quran by unidentified persons at Kasi Road of the City on June 3. The strike call was give by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-Ideological) which was also supported by other political and religious parties including Anjuman-e-Tajiran Balochistan. Almost all of the shopping and trading centers in the City, including Abdul Sattar Road, Liaquat Bazaar, Shahra-e-Iqbal, Prince Road, Meezan Chowk, Jinnah Road and adjoining areas remained closed for the day. Traffic plying on the roads of the City was thin as compared to normal days. Stringent security measures were adopted during the strike to maintain law and order. Policemen and paramilitary troops were deployed in sensitive areas to avoid any untoward incident. Meanwhile, a large number of activists of JUI-I and Tahafuz-e-Namoos Risalat took out a rally and staged a protest demo at Meezan Chowk. Protesters were chanting slogans against the accused persons demanding for immediate strict action against them. Addressing the rally, JUI leaders condemned the incident of desecration of the Holy Quran, saying that JUI had given a five day-ultimatum for arresting the accused persons but no accused had been arrested so far. They said that the recent incident of desecration of Holy Quran had hurt the sentiments of thousands of Muslims and the accused persons were still at large. They demanded of the authorities concerned to take strict action against the accused persons and bring them to justice ,otherwise, they would continue their protests.
