Gilani calls Musharraf’s exit decision as a ‘deal’

KARACHI-Former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani has said that former Army Chief General (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf was allowed to leave the country after negotiations with establishment and the then opposition.

Speaking to media at Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh media cell, Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani that the government agreed on allowing Pervez Musharraf to leave Pakistan after negotiations with establishment and opposition parties in the country.

He also said that the government of Pakistan should retain its decision if it was done on consultation.

Gilani said he, along with the then president Zardari held talks with establishment, adding that it wasn’t possible to take resignation from Musharraf without the consent of establishment. He confirmed that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was also involved in the dialogue process.

The former Prime Minister said PML-N shouldn’t have lodged case against Musharraf, adding that it was decided that Musharraf will not be impeached if he resigns himself. He questioned as to how a strong general can resign without any agreement?

Gilani said there was no chance of any positive change in the country in the coming months.

He reiterated that the PPP had adhered to the reconciliation policy of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto, adding that it would not become party to those seeking to undermine democracy in the present scenario.

Yusuf Raza Gilani further said that Nawaz Sharif himself had led anti-government public rallies in the past and warned of opposition in case any undemocratic action is taken.

Commenting over PTI chairman, He said Imran Khan has a right to stage protests, adding that Khan and Nawaz should enjoy healthy relations. He said PPP will not support any unconstitutional step if taken by Imran Khan.

On NWA operation, Gilani said that PPP government had not focused on launching an operation in North Waziristan during its tenure because former army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani wanted the decision to be his alone.

Gilani also said that the PPP had restored the Constitution to its original form.
