PAC seeks report on Nespak irregularities

ISLAMABAD - The Auditor General of Pakistan Wednesday revealed before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK) had submitted only Rs 3 million to government out of Rs 833 million profits due to its poor internal audit system.
The PAC meeting was held at Parliament House under the chairmanship of opposition leader in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah.
During the meeting, officials from the AGP further disclosed that the NESPAK audit of year 2013-14 and the recovery of Rs 2.7 billion could not be recovered due to the poor audit infrastructure.
 It was informed to the committee that NESPAK hired a house on rent without the approval of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and faced Rs 4.7 million loss.
Secretary Water and Power informed the committee that the ministry was working on selection of best auditor while ensuring the committee that NESPAK audit will be completed till September.
He said that NESPAK has recovered the Rs 400 million and it had written a letter to the ERRA for recovery of another amount but ERRA had not given positive response due to the shortage of funds.
The ministry launched an inquiry on the issue of hiring the house on rent without approval of PM and it was proved the irregularities in the report, the secretary admitted.
Auditor General of Pakistan pointed out that NESPAK paid Rs 200 million to different car rentals and paid Rs 3.4 million illegally.
Managing Director NESPAK told the committee that NESPAK had hired the vehicles for the visits of more than 250 sites of ERRA project and NESPAK constituted an inquiry committee on the issue of illegal payment and investigation underway.
The Chairman PAC ordered the financial discipline committee over the irregularities in NESPAK and sought report in the next meeting of the committee.
