RAWALPINDI - There was no let-up in sectarian target killings in the twin cities as another Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (AWSJ) local leader was shot dead Tuesday by two unknown assailants on a motorcycle at Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, within the limits of Pirwadhai police station.
It was the second executive target killing in the twin cities as ASWJ Rawalpindi Secretary Information Muhammad Suhail Muavia was killed during a brazen armed attack by unknown assailants on Islamabad Expressway Monday night.
The slain ASWJ leader, identified as Muhammad Abu Bakar, 20, son of Hussain Ahmed Gull of Dhoke Naju and a student, received four bullets in his chest and head, a doctor at Holy Family Hospital told this scribe.
According to eyewitnesses and those who shifted the dead body to Holy Family Hospital, Muhammad Abu Bakar was going in his car towards Muhammadi Chowk at Khayaban-e-Sir Syed at 8:35pm when the assailants riding a bike opened fire on him. As a result, Abu Bakar who was the head of ASWJ Khayaban Sector died on the spot. The attackers fled away, the eyewitnesses said, adding some people shifted the body to the hospital in a private car.
The news of the armed attack on the ASWJ leader spread like a jungle’s fire as within no time a large number of ASWJ workers and leaders reached the hospital where they protested the target killing. A heavy contingent of police, led by SP Rawal Division Karamat Ullah Malik, rushed to the crime scene, cordoned it off; collected evidences and recorded public statements. The fear caused by the incident gripped the whole locality and shopkeepers shut down their businesses.
Pirwadhai Ishtiaq Masood Cheema, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying Abu Bakar came under the armed attack at Khayaban-e-Sir Syed.
Two attackers fired volley of bullets on the car of Abu Bakar near Cheema Plaza when he was going home from his seminary. Rawal Division SP Karamat Ullah Malik, when contacted, said police were investigating the matter from different aspects.
