PESHAWAR - In order to commemorate International Mothers Day, a function was held under the aegis of University of Peshawar, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar Uplift Programme, and South Asian Centre for International and Regional Studies.
Secretary Higher Education Farah Hamid was the chief guest of the ceremony. Vice Chancellor UoP Prof Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan, Rashid Chughtai of the PUP, and Chief Organizer Dr Syed Hussain Shaheed Soherwerdi were among the ones present. Two hundred proud mothers and a good number of students and faculty members of UoP were also among the participants.
Exemplary mothers including mother of the martyred police personnel were presented special awards. The daylong function was full of emotions as the speakers reiterated the importance of mother in the life of an individual and the resolve to change the socially constructed identity of mothers in Pakistan.
Mother songs presented by singer Karan Khan and Humayoun Khan were also part of the event. Besides documentary on the resilience of Pakistani mothers and a video message from Maulana Tariq Jammel on the stature of mothers in Islam were also shown in the ceremony.
Being the mother institution, University of Peshawar is playing its due role in giving educated mothers to the country, especially the pakhtun nation, said Vice Chancellor UoP Prof Dr Rasul Jan in his address. He added the notion of Mothers Day as a western event was not true and said that positives of both the east and west can be adopted while negatives should be thrown away to bring improvement in the society.
The importance of a mother in our lives can be judged by the one who does not have mothers alive, said Secretary Higher Education Farah Hamid Khan. She added that the most unbearable thing for a mother is when her children are in trouble while the tragedy of her life is when she sees her kids dead.
That is why the mothers of martyrs should have special place in society.
