Government terminates secy finance’s contract

ISLAMABAD - The government on Tuesday cancelled the contract of Secretary Finance Abdul Wajid Rana and appointed him as member of Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC).
Sources said that government took this decision due to objections raised by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly. The PAC had shown concern over the reappointment of retired officers including Secretary Finance Abdul Wajid Rana on contract basis.
Reports said Accountant General of Pakistan, Akhtar Buland Rana, at the PAC meeting, had criticised the government for giving control of the country's finances to an official who had been appointed in violation of rules and the apex court's orders.
Later, the Accountant General of Pakistan Revenues (AGPR) stopped the salary of Finance Secretary Abdul Wajid Rana and two other officials because they were working at the highest positions on contract basis allegedly in violation of the Supreme Court’s order in Haj Scandal.
Wajid was re-employed on contract basis in November 2012 as principal officer to look after the duty of the finance secretary after his retirement on reaching the age of superannuation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has appointed Abdul Khaliq as acting secretary finance. Sources said that government would appoint new finance secretary in next few days.
President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of Premier Raja, Tuesday appointed Wajid Rana as member of the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC).
