SC allows ECP to reschedule LG polls in Sindh, Punjab

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday accepted the request of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for delaying local government (LG) elections in Sindh and Punjab.
The court ordered the ECP to issue new schedule for LG polls after finalizing all arrangements. The LG polls in Sindh and Punjab were scheduled for January 18 and 30 respectively. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussian Jillani heard the case. During the course of proceedings, the ECP submitted its reply before the court. The Commission contended that it was not possible for it to hold elections on given dates in the two provinces.
The bench allowed the ECP to reschedule the LB elections in the two provinces and adjourned further hearing of the case till first week of February.
Later talking to newsmen outside the Supreme Court building, ECP Secretary Ishtiak Ahmed Khan stated that as per directives of the apex court the Commission would announce new dates for holding LG elections after amendment in law.
Ishtiak Ahmed said LG polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and cantonment areas would be held as per schedule,i.e., on February 28. A meeting in this regard would be held on January 15 to finalize arrangements,  he added.
Replying to a question, the ECP Secretary said the delimitation process would be carried out as per the court orders.
