PFA to not disclose identity of accused until guilty, after trial: LHC

LAHORE: Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of the Lahore High Court yesterday observed that which law allows Punjab Food Authority to post photos of raids at different shops at social media and to declare people guilty of selling poor and unhygienic food in the markets.

The judge gave these remarks on a petition filed by Restaurant Association. Justice Shah also observed that the identity of an accused cannot be exposed until and unless a court of law declares him guilty.

During the course of hearing, Advocate Pir Masood Chishti told the judge that Ms Ayesha Mumtaz, the officer of the Punjab Food Authority, used to raid at different places and post photos of raids on facebook and other social media networks.

He contended that she herself declared many traders as criminals before they could undergo any trial. The businesses of the citizens got damaged due to her social media campaigns and they suffered a loss of millions of rupees, he argued.

After hearing the arguments of the petitioners’ counsel, Justice Shah ordered the food authority to decide the pending appeal and submit report before the court within four days time.
