Comprehensive planning needed to prevent violent extremism: Maleeha Lodhi

NEW YORK: Ambassador of Pakistan at United Nations (UN) Dr Maleeha Lodhi has called for comprehensive planning to prevent violent extremism across the globe.

Addressing a debate on strategy for the prevention of violent extremism at UN General Assembly in New York on Sunday, Dr Maleeha Lodhi said injustice, backwardness and economic deprivation are major causes of extremism.

She said that indigenous and external factors promote extremism and terrorism in the society.

Dr. Maleeha Lodhi said terrorist exploit right to self-determination and injustice for their nefarious designs and factors inciting violence should not be given less attention.

She said out of twenty points of National Action Plan in Pakistan, eight points are related to eradication of extremism.

The Pakistani envoy further said that deliberate character assassination of other religions and culture for political gains is unfortunate.
